Program Descriptions:

Presentation 1 - Close Encounters with THOSE People: A Different Perspective on Diversity & Disability - by Jo Fenton, Training Coordinator, NYS Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, Division of Advocacy.
We so often hear people talk about "those" people. Who exactly do we mean by "those" people and how does our relatability to "those" people affect our job performance? Join in this activity-based workshop designed to provide an opportunity for emergency responders to learn how to better meet the needs of persons with special needs.

Presentation 2 – Autism and Emergency Responder Response - by Suzanne de Beaumont, Assistant Executive Director, Resource Center for Accessible Living
The purpose of this program is to ensure and ehance critical decision-making, communication, safety and scene management during Autismrelatedcontacts in the firld and emergency room. The following will be reviewed:
• Characteristics of Autism.
• Identification of public safety risks for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
• Autism and contact with the criminal justice system.
• Communication Do's and Dont's.
• Getting the most out of an interview with a person with Autism.
• Working with families and/or advocacy organizations.

Presentation 3 – Approaching Alzheimer's: Make Your First Response the Right Response - by Meg Boyce, Director of Programs and Services, Alzheimer's Association - Hudson Valley, Rockland/Westchester, NY Chapter
The purpose of this program is to provide relevant and practical information to emergency responders. The training is designed to give emergency responders information that will make it easier for them to do their job quickly and effectively when dealing with an Alzheimer's patient. Attendees will:
• Receive important information about persons with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
• Be able to understand the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia and relevant treatment.
• Learn recognizable traits of dementia (age, facial expression, attire, balance/gait, actions) and how to approach the diagnosed individual.
• Ascertain communication techniques (talk tactics).
• Become familiar with the Stages of the disease.
• Be able to determine Alzheimer's alerts in the home.
• Signs of neglect.
• Disaster response and strategies.
